The larger-than-life Adelante Juntos (Forward Together) mural celebrates the past, present and future of Latinx culture at Wichita State. Dive into the intricate journey of the mural’s creation with its creator Nathalia Gallego (GLeo) and directors Ulrich Museum of Art and Armando Minjárez (Del Norte Studio).

Summer 2024 graduates may find information regarding their diplomas on the Registrar’s Office webpage (wichita.edu/diplomas).

• The deadline to submit a name change on diplomas is the last day of classes, July 26.
• The diploma distribution date for the summer 2024 semester is Sept. 9. Diplomas can be picked up at the transcript window on the first floor of Jardine Hall, and graduates must show identification.
• Graduates can request to have the diploma mailed to them for a fee through myWSU under the myClasses tab, clicking “Graduation Links” and “Request for Diploma Mailing.”
• Undergraduate students who wish to take courses after graduation need to reactivate their record after receiving their diploma.

The 2024 issue of Kansas English, the award-winning peer-reviewed journal of the Kansas Association of Teachers of English (KATE), is now available on WSU’s Open Journal Systems. Katie Cramer, professor of English education, has served as editor-in-chief of Kansas English since 2017 and collaborates with Susan Matveyeva, journal manager of Univeristy Libraries, to publish the journal each year.

This year’s issue of Kansas English was published June 25 and features the work of several WSU-affiliated faculty, graduates and students in addition to scholarly and creative work from authors across the state and region:

• Nathan G. Whitman, WSU alum and KATE president, published “Perspectives from the President.”
• Carrie Dickison, associate teaching professor and assistant director of WSU’s Writing Program, published “Revising Writing Assignments in Response to Generative AI.”
• WSU students Michelle Anderson, Baylee Reyes and Mattelyn Swartz co-authored a children’s book review entitled “Unveiling Courage: A Review of Trudy Ludwig’s Brave Every Day.”
• 2024 WSU graduate Haven Massey had two pieces published: a reflective essay entitled “Do As I Say and As I Do: Creating Strong Writers by Emphasizing and Modeling the Process” and a young adult book review entitled “Monumental Stories Found in We Deserve Monuments.”
• 2024 WSU graduate Danika Pester published a young adult book review entitled “A Glimpse of McCurdy: Her Rise & Fall from Fame in I’m Glad My Mom Died.”
• In addition, the 2024 editorial review board includes several WSU faculty and alumni: Robin Folkerts, Krystal Iseminger, Sally Kimball, Victoria Opalewski, Blake Overman, Nancy Sturm, Keely Tolbert, Nathan Whitman and Dr. Kim Wilson.

Those interested in submitting their work to Kansas English can review the call for general submissions as well as the call for column submissions.

Today marks the 60th anniversary of the Corbin Education Center, home of the College of Applied Studies at Wichita State University. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and dedicated on June 28, 1964, Corbin is known for its unique design and historical significance.

Update any references to Handshake in your materials and communications to reflect the switch to Shocker Central. Change Handshake links on your webpage to Shocker Central at: wichita.edu/ShockerCentral.

If you have used Handshake to post student positions, log into the Handshake system (wichitastate.joinhandshake.com/login) and download any job descriptions you may want to reuse in Shocker Central in the future.

Christine Yim is the new assistant director for Student Conduct & Community Standards (SCCS). She oversees the student conduct hearing board and academic integrity committee, the academic integrity process, campus outreach initiatives and the conflict resolution process. She also consults with students, faculty and staff as needed in regard to academic integrity or student conduct concerns.

Wichita State has released the names of the 3,429 students included in the spring 2024 semester Dean’s Honor Roll list. To be included on the honor roll, students must be a full-time student (at least 12 credit hours) and have at least a 3.5 grade point average on the 4.0 scale.

The WSU Child Development Center has open pre-K spots for the upcoming school year. To be eligible for its pre-K classroom, children need to be entering kindergarten in the fall of 2025.

With dozens of brightly colored origami figures decorating the shelves and sketches covering the whiteboard in the corner, Catherine Searle’s office looks more like an art studio than a space to do fundamental research in mathematics. 

Searle’s field of study has a bad rap, a fact of which she is fully aware. 

“I get it – Math can be terrifying at times,” Searle, professor of mathematics, said. “But there’s so much to discover and create, and there’s still so much to solve.”
