Join the School of Performing Arts for a season that is Boldly Creative – where bold ideas take shape, new voices are amplified and artists work together to create meaningful experiences that ignite imagination, build connection and inspire what is possible.

The season kicks off at 7:30 p.m. tonight, Sept. 17 with a reading of “DINNERTIME: A Play in Seven Courses” at the Welsbacher Black Box Theatre in the Hughes Metropolitan Complex.

Tickets are $17 general admission, and WSU students can get one free ticket with their Shocker ID courtesy of the Student Government Association).

The School of Performing Arts invites you to join in celebrating an exciting new voice in American theatre and to mark your calendars for a moving evening of storytelling this fall as it presents a reading of “Dinnertime: A Play in Seven Courses” by Anna Halza at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 17-19 in the Welsbacher Black Box Theatre at the Hughes Metropolitan Sports Complex as the inaugural production of the 2026-27 performing arts season.

Halza, writer, actor and theatremaker in Norman, Oklahoma — who won the 2026 Bela Kiralyfalvi National Student Playwriting Competition for “Dinnertime: A Play in Seven Courses” — is a fourth-year student at Oklahoma University and will graduate in spring 2027 with a BFA in drama and a BA in professional writing. She is the co-writer of two devised works with Co.Arts Theater Co., titled “How To Smoke Three Cigarettes At Once” and “This City Will Eat You Alive,” the latter of which she is also starring in.

After more than twenty years of service, the School of Performing Arts celebrates the retirement of Professor Ed Baker, whose leadership, mentorship and creative vision have had a lasting impact on Wichita State.

Join the School of Performing Arts for a reception to mark the impact of an incredible educator, leader, mentor and friend from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, May 7 in Wilner Auditorium.

Since joining the faculty in 2006, Baker has served as technical director and educator, playing a vital role in hundreds of productions while championing safety, innovation and artistic excellence.

In addition to his work in the theatre, Baker provided impactful leadership and service to the College of Fine Arts and the university, contributing his expertise to production planning, facilities oversight and collaborative initiatives that supported academic and artistic excellence across disciplines.

He has been a trusted voice in advancing best practices for safety, operations and student-centered learning, and he has generously mentored faculty and staff, particularly in areas of professional development and institutional knowledge.

Baker also developed the Stage Management Certificate program, expanding applied learning opportunities for students and strengthening the school’s curriculum.

A Wichita State alumnus, his career reflects a lifelong commitment to theatre education, collaboration and service. His influence will continue to be felt through the countless students, colleagues and artists he supported throughout his career.
